When everything else has failed — elimination, substitution, engineering, administrative controls — PPE is what stands between a worker and the hazard. Which makes it worth asking: when was the last time anyone actually inspected it?

A documented APD inspeksi daftar periksa ensures protective equipment still performs as intended, rather than merely being present on site.

Why PPE Inspection Gets Overlooked

Unlike lifting gear or fall arrest systems, everyday PPE rarely has a formal inspection regime. It is issued, worn, and replaced when it looks obviously damaged. Three problems follow:

Degradation is gradual. A helmet weakened by UV exposure looks identical to a new one. Chemical gloves lose permeation resistance long before they tear.

No issue or expiry tracking. Nobody knows when a particular item entered service or when the manufacturer’s shelf life ends.

Damaged items stay in circulation. An item set aside as faulty, but not tagged or removed, usually reappears in the store within days.

PPE Inspection Checklist by Category

Head Protection

Shell free of cracks, dents, gouges, or chalky surface (a sign of UV degradation)

Suspension harness intact, straps not frayed or stretched

Date of manufacture within the service life stated by the manufacturer

No unauthorised drilling, painting, or stickers over structural areas

Eye and Face Protection

Lenses free of deep scratches, pitting, or crazing that impairs vision

Frame not distorted; side shields present where required

Correct impact rating for the task (not a general-purpose lens on grinding work)

Hand Protection

No cuts, punctures, or worn-through fingertips

For chemical gloves: no swelling, stiffening, or discolouration indicating chemical attack

Correct glove type for the specific hazard — cut, chemical, thermal, or electrical

Respiratory Protection

Facepiece seal intact, no cracks or hardening of rubber components

Exhalation and inhalation valves clean, flexible, and seated correctly

Cartridge or filter within service life and correct for the contaminant present

User fit-tested and clean-shaven where a tight seal is required

Hearing Protection

Earmuff cushions not hardened, cracked, or compressed flat

Headband tension still adequate to maintain seal

Reusable earplugs clean and not deformed

Foot Protection

Sole not separating from upper; tread not worn smooth

Protective toe cap intact, no visible deformation after impact

Electrical hazard or slip-resistance rating still appropriate for the task

The Non-Negotiable Rule

Any item failing inspection must be removed from service immediately and tagged or destroyed so it cannot be reissued. For head protection and respirators in particular, an item that has taken an impact or a chemical exposure should be permanently withdrawn regardless of external appearance.

Building It Into a Routine

A workable inspection regime has two layers:

Pre-use check by the wearer — quick visual and functional check before each shift, recorded as part of the daily start-up routine.

Periodic inspection by a competent person — scheduled at intervals defined by the manufacturer and site risiko, with results logged against the individual item.

The second layer only works if items are individually identifiable. Assigning an ID to helmets, respirators, and reusable protective gear turns “we inspect our PPE” into “here is the inspection history for this specific item”.

Making Records Auditable

Running PPE inspeksi through a digital checklist addresses the three failure points above directly: each inspection is time-stamped, a failed item automatically generates a tagged corrective action with an owner, and the inspection history for any individual item can be retrieved during an audit in seconds rather than hours.

Start with one category — respiratory protection and head protection are common first choices because they carry the highest consequence of failure — then extend across the rest of the PPE inventory once the workflow is proven.

For equipment used specifically in work at height, see the dedicated fall protection equipment checklist, or read our guide on choosing HSE inspection software to run these checks digitally.

A PPE inspection checklist covers head, eye, hand, respiratory, hearing, and foot protection.
